Students’ Movements

The first organisation to be formed after the foundation of the party was ‘Maharashtra Navnriman Vidyarthi Sena’. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Shri. Raj Saheb Thackeray himself too is a leadership born of the students’ movement. That was the cause of his special interest in constructing this organisation. The first blow given by the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena was to those institute owners who had set up a trade of education by closing Marathi medium schools under the pretext of the growing influence of English medium schools and transforming some into English medium schools.

NEET Movement

Students from the 2016-17 batch willing to enroll for medical education had prepared for Maharashtra State CET, but an abrupt verdict by Supreme Court made it mandatory for students to pass the NEET exam. It was distressful for students to study for an entire year a syllabus that was changed, along with exam pattern, on the threshold of the tests. Students and parents met with Raj Saheb Thackeray. As the future of 450 thousand students from the state was tied to this issue, Raj saheb instantly got in touch with the Prime Minister of the country Shri. Narendra Modi. He made an appeal that even though the subject was under Supreme Court’s jurisdiction, the PM would please look into the matter and bring relief to the students, otherwise, they are highly prone to succumb to depression.

The Central government took positive steps and the NEET exam was cancelled through an order. The 450 thousand students who were going through tension got huge relief. Raj saheb sincerely thanked the then Chief Minister Shri. Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi for the action. In 2018, in the Medical (NEET) admission process, the state government ignored the implementation of the domicile rule for ‘giving priority to local students. Candidates migrating from other states grabbed the opportunity and brought the court’s stay on admissions given to students of Maharashtra according to the domicile rule. Parents from Maharashtra approached Shri. Raj Saheb with this complaint. Immediately Shri. Raj Saheb Thackeray organised a press conference in Pune and established a firm stance that ‘Students from Maharashtra must get preference’. The honorable court also heeded the plea and admonished the state government, and it lifted the stay on admissions given to local candidates.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Paper Leak Scandal

In 2018, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a re-exam of two subjects from 10th and 12th-grade certificates due to a question paper leak scandal. On this background, the parents of the students from CBSE schools met with Shri. Raj Saheb Thackeray at his residence ‘Krishna Kunj’.

“It is, first of all, a folly of the government that the question papers of CBSE exams were leaked before the exam date. When the government cannot safeguard the confidentiality of question papers, what is the fault of the students? Why should they reappear for the tests of those two subjects? I appeal to the parents in the whole country that they shall not make their wards attend the re=exams in any circumstances. If the government finds you submissive, it will make you bend even further down. You stay staunch on your resolution; let the government decide whatever it wants to.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is standing firm and will remain so behind the students and their parents all over the country. Unite and make the government yield to you.” To this call from Raj saheb to the parents across India started gaining responses from the entire country. Voices of protests were heard from other states too. Finally, it was decided that the re-exam will not take place. 1.6 million students breathed a sigh of relief.

Let’s make Maharashtra the world’s envy.

Maharashtra Navanirman Sena is to create a farsighted model of development and to implement it via political power.

Agitation of the deaf and dumb students

In 2019, an agitation by students had taken place in Pune that stunned the education system. Deaf and dumb students had been sitting in before the office of Social Welfare Commissioner for multiple demands. But at the instruction from the administration to suppress the protests, the police launched a baton charge on the protesters. Since the agitators were deaf and dumb, their cries were the only reaction to the baton charge.

Shri. Raj Saheb Thackeray set out to meet the protesters the same night. As soon as Raj Saheb reached the site of the event, coordinators of the protesting students presented their side. “We want education through sign language. But they do not provide us adequate facilities and teachers. This system is neither suitable for jobs or self-employment. How shall we survive? We appealed to the government multiple times, but the government is indifferent.” “The officer who ordered lathi charge on my students shall be immediately fired. The demands of the protesters are reasonable. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is there to provide you firm support. I will certainly convey your demands to the Chief Minister.” Raj saheb thus comforted the innocent deaf and dumb students. Even till date, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is pursuing their demands in the government.

Taming the Haughty Institute Owners

According to the government’s law, schools must give admissions to students without demanding donations. Therefore, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) is aggressive against those schools when they openly demand exorbitant donations. MNVS brings justice to students and parents with a blow to the institute owners, sometimes by complaining to the Education Minister or at others by rendering innovation protests.

Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena got into aggressive mode on the unfortunate incident of a school bus catching fire in Navi Mumbai. MNVS dignitaries started surveying and scanning schools that were running such transport services. They held the owners of the institutes that were charging extra but not providing equitable facilities on critical edge along with the parents. We brought the issue of students’ safety on the anvil in Maharashtra through various protests and actions. Subsequently, the Maharashtra government imposed the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles (for School Buses) Law, 2011 on every school as per the school bus policy related to students’ safe transportation.

In Nasik, a school was illegally selling school books from its own office. As soon as the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena members got to know this, they asked the Head Mistress’s clarification and requested them to stop this practice. But when the school management gave duplicitous replies, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena registered a complaint at Deputy Director of Nasik Educational Board. The concerned authorities have drawn orders to revoke the government’s recognition of the school. Similarly, between 2013 and 218, Maharashtra was facing the heat of drought. The situation in Marathwada was especially serious. Farmer families were tormented by the scarcity of water due to lack of rain, and the menace of the need for double sowing. To give them some relief, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena had persuaded the Regional Deputy Commissioner for ‘100 % waver of educational fees for students in Marathwada’.

A platform for young people and the voice of students

Mumbai University was once the leading university in the country. One has to say ‘was’, because students now have to repeatedly face problems arising from chaos in exam scheduling and conducting, delay in declaring results, etc. Therefore the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena panel under the leadership of MNS leader Shri. Amit Thackeray met with the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor at the time. They have narrated a list of all the problems and also asked for clarification by the students’ representatives on why they have to frequently face troubles.

The Vidyarthi Sena spread all over Maharashtra through visits to colleges in various parts of the state and bringing the students together. MNVS is known all over Maharashtra for closure on frauds in the admission process, clearing the chaos in Universities, and as a youth forum and students’ voice. MNVS has been carrying out such programmes, and will continue to do so. We invite you to join us.
