Fight for Celebration of Hindu Festivals

Indian culture is a confluence of Hindu culture and many streams joining it. There is co-existence at its core. But if anyone raises challenges this culture by haughtiness or hoodlumism, we will not spare them without reparations.

Dahi-Handi : Festival of Marathi unity

The Supreme Court imposed restrictions on festivals like Dahi Handi (curd pot) due to the subservient standpoint of the state government. Even the Supreme Court delivered a verdict without hearing out the plea of the participating “Govinda” squads. All the political leaders who otherwise reaped gains on the support of these Govinda teams kept mum. Dahi Handi was being cancelled everywhere; Govinda squads were seen being victimised by injustice. The agonised Govinda teams met with Shri. Raj Saheb Thackeray. Raj saheb called a press conference and registered objections to the lame position of the state government and lopsided verdict of the Supreme Court.

Viewpoint put forth by Shri. Raj Thackeray :

  • It is agreeable that festivals like Dahi Handi have been getting highly commercialised, and that there are some malpractices that must be stopped; but why does the Supreme Court habitually impose restraints on Hindu festivals? They say accidents and injuries occur in Dahi Handi But then what about the individuals in Muharram processions that beat themselves to bleed? Don’t the loudspeakers on mosques create sound pollution? The government or court won’t take any action on their festivals, lest there will be riots they fear.
  • They deny permission for Dahi Handi on account of physical injuries. Gymnasts in Olympic games do get injuries; even cricketers keep getting injured. Thus, would they deny entering the Olympics or playing cricket too? The state government too did not pitch appropriately in the court; had they done, we wouldn’t have witnessed this situation. We have fundamental doubt about the heart of the state government. Does it have any place for Hindu festivals?
  • Including little children in Dahi Handi Govinda Pathak, squads are absolutely wrong and must be stopped. My contention is about the ceiling imposed by the court on the number of layers. Dahi Handi is our own festival, and it must be celebrated in a traditional manner.

Concluding the above argument, Raj saheb reassured the Govinda teams with the words, “Celebrate Dahi Handi fervently while following all precautionary measures for safety. I will take care of any conflicts that arise in the future.” Maharashtra Navnirman Sena organised traditional Dahi Handi festival everywhere as per the order by Raj saheb. Govinda teams stacked nine layers in the Dahi Handi ceremony held by Thane district chief Shri. Avinash Jadhav amid mammoth crowd, customary band instruments, and games; while ensuring to abide by all the safety standards. Thus, the shadow of restraining and undermining was washed off the Dahi Handi festival.

Ganesh Festival

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation had harassed the Ganesh festival organisers by enforcing tormenting confitions upon them. 31 Ganesh Festival boards from South Mumbai made an appeal against this to Shri. Raj saheb Thackeray. At the time, Raj saheb had promised to reach Girgaon to meet them. He kept it with a meeting with the dignitaries in Khetwadi (Khotwadi). He reassured the Ganesh festival boards to ‘erect the awnings without fear; and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena being there to back them up’.

Subsequently MNS leader Shri. Amit Thackeray met the state Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis at the latter’s Varsha residence. Amit ji said during the conversation with the Chief Minister, “Many of these boards in Mumbai are very old, and some of them have entered silver, golden, and diamond jubilee years. The administration is harassing these boards celebrating the festival in traditional manner regarding permissions about the awning.” The Chief Minister comprehended the matter quickly, and asked the Municipal Commissioner to remove all obstacles before the Ganesh Festival boards, and the matter reached a solution.
